Privacy Policy
How SlashSnip handles your data
1. Overview
SlashSnip is a Chrome browser extension that expands text snippets in any text field. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.
Key principle: We prioritize your privacy. Your snippets, settings, and optional profile information are stored locally on your device. The free version does not transmit data to any external servers.
2. Data We Collect
2.1 Data Stored Locally (on your device)
The extension stores the following data using Chrome's built-in storage API:
- Text snippets — your templates, shortcuts, and content
- Categories — organization of your snippets
- Settings — trigger preferences, theme, language
- Usage statistics — local snippet usage counts (for sorting)
- Favorites — your marked favorite snippets
- Profile information — optional fields you provide (name, company, email, phone) for use in smart variables
- Clipboard history — recently copied text with the page URL where the copy occurred, stored locally for browsing past copies while Save Clipboard History remains enabled in the extension settings (enabled by default and user-controllable at any time). The {{clipboard}} variable reads the current system clipboard at the moment of insertion (not from history)
- Page context data — current page URL, domain, and title, used only when you invoke smart variables like {{url}}, {{domain}}, {{pagetitle}}
This data never leaves your device. It is not transmitted to any external servers.
2.2 Data We Do NOT Collect
- Browsing history
- Cookies from websites you visit
- Passwords or login credentials
- Financial information
- Keystrokes or text you type (we only detect the trigger pattern like // and read smart variable data when you explicitly use them)
3. Extension Permissions Explained
SlashSnip requires certain permissions to function. Here's why each permission is needed:
| Permission | Why Needed |
|---|---|
storage | Save your snippets and preferences locally |
scripting | Register page-context helpers and targeted insertion logic for editors that need a main-world execution path |
tabs | Find or open the current tab and related extension surfaces such as the Side Panel, Dashboard, and pricing page |
contextMenus | Right-click menu for quick snippet access |
sidePanel | Show snippet panel alongside web pages |
alarms | Schedule background checks such as trial period expiration |
downloads | Enable the Export feature to download your snippets as a JSON backup file |
host_permissions (<all_urls>) | Allow always-on content scripts and page-context helpers on websites with editable fields, including local variables like {{url}}, {{domain}}, and {{pagetitle}} |
4. Third-Party Services
4.1 Chrome Web Store
The extension is designed for distribution through the Chrome Web Store, operated by Google. Google may collect anonymous usage statistics. Please refer to Google's Privacy Policy for details.
4.2 External Connections
Extension core: Snippet storage and text expansion run entirely within the browser. Your snippets are never sent to any external server.
Billing and license activation: When you purchase SlashSnip PRO, payment is processed securely through Stripe. Only billing metadata (subscription status, license key, customer email) is exchanged with our server and Stripe. Snippet content is never sent to Stripe or to our servers.
Help desk and uninstall feedback: If you submit a help request or uninstall feedback through the website, the message text and optional email you provide are stored in a server-side queue for review. No snippet content is collected through these forms.
Optional tips and updates emails: If you opt in on the Welcome page, we store your email address, consent version, consent text snapshot, confirmation status, and related timestamps in server-side storage. Lawful basis: consent. Resend acts as our email processor for the confirmation email and any future optional product updates after that confirmation step.
Pending opt-ins expire automatically within 48 hours of the original request, even if you ask for a newer confirmation email during that same window. Confirmed records are retained until you withdraw consent. If SlashSnip later sends optional tips and updates emails, each message will include unsubscribe instructions. Until then, contact support@slashsnip.com.
5. Data Security
Your snippets and settings are stored using Chrome's secure local storage API (chrome.storage.local). This data remains on your device and is not synced across browsers. We follow security best practices in our code development.
6. Cookies & Analytics
6.1 Extension
The SlashSnip browser extension does not use cookies. All preferences are stored locally using Chrome's storage API.
6.2 Website (slashsnip.com)
Our website does not use any analytics cookies or tracking scripts. We believe in a privacy-first approach across all our products.
7. Children's Privacy
SlashSnip is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly ask children to provide personal information. Optional profile fields are only stored if a user explicitly enters them in Settings.
If you believe a child has entered profile information on a device you control, you can clear it locally from SlashSnip settings or uninstall the extension. If you believe a child has provided billing information through Stripe, contact us and we will investigate.
8. GDPR Compliance (EU Users)
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):
- Right to access — request a copy of your personal data
- Right to rectification — correct inaccurate personal data
- Right to erasure — request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten")
- Right to restrict processing — limit how we use your data
- Right to data portability — receive your data in a portable format
- Right to object — object to processing of your data
Note: Since all data is stored locally on your device, you have complete control. Export your snippets anytime, or uninstall the extension to remove all data.

For optional tips and updates emails, the lawful basis is consent. You can withdraw that consent at any time. Future optional emails will include unsubscribe instructions, and you can also contact support@slashsnip.com.
